Town Hall: Hate Crimes and LGBT Communities
While the overall number of hate crimes in America have been going down, hate (bias-related) crimes against people who identify as or are perceived to be LGBT are not, according to the FBI’s 2012 Hate Crime Report. The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Projects reported last spring that while the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV-affected (LGBTH) homicide rate fell by 16.7% from 2011, 2012 holds the record as having the fourth highest murder rate for LGBTQ and people with HIV. What’s more, the report found that “LGBTQ people of color were 1.82 times as likely to experience physical violence compared to white LGBTQ people.” These appalling numbers reveal an epidemic of violence directed at LGBT people. Come out and meet Baltimore City Police Commissioner Anthony Batts and discuss your concerns and recommendations on this important health and social justice issue. Co-sponsored by Baltimore Black Pride and Baltimore Police Commissioner’s LGBT Advisory Council.
